Nileshwaram






Nileshwaram  also known as Nileshwar, is a municipality in the Kasaragod District of Kerala state, South India. It is one of the three municipalities of Kasaragod district, the other two being Kasaragod and Kanhangad. Nileshwaram lies between two rivers, Nileshwaram and Karyangodu. To the west is the Arabian Sea.


Nileshwaram is a picturesque spot in Kasargod, sandwitched between two rivers, Nileshwaram and Karyangodu. It is well known for its backwaters, rivers and the beaches. It also has a rich cultural legacy. The place was the seat of the Nileshwar Rajas. The Nileshwaram Palace is under the Department of Archeology and functions as a folklore centre. Various competitions are held here and shows are also organized. The name Nileshwar comes from "Neelakandeswaran" referring to Lord Siva. There is a legend that the place was named after sage Neela who installed the Deity of Iswara(Lord Siva) in that place. The town is also famous for its 'kavu' or shrines. One of the well known Kaav is the "Mannampurath Kaavu" which situated in Nileshwar town itself. There also several centres in the town offering rejuvenation therapy and naturopathy treatments.The longest foot bridge in Kerala is situated in the town of Nileshwaram.


Nileshwaram, the cultural center of Kasargod district is situated around 40kms south of Kasargod town in Hosdurg taluk. This quiet and peaceful town is renowned for its delightful backwaters, meandering rivers and tranquil beaches. The place was the seat of the Nileshwar Rajas who inhered in the family unit of Kolathris and their palace (Nileshwaram Palace), today operates as a folklore centre of the Department of Archeology. At the center of the palace building, there is a big pond where swimming practice and competitions are held. 
The town is also famous for its numerous shrines called 'kavu', several yoga and cultural centers which offers rejuvenation therapy and naturopathy treatments like mud and herbal baths.
